If you missed it at the Milwaukee Film Festival in November, you can now catch "Chump Change" on a special features-loaded Miramax DVD (released Tuesday). The comedy, which was a labor of love for Milwaukee-raised writer / director / actor Steve Burrows, takes place both in sunny California and snowy Wisconsin as Burrows tries to make it as a star in Hollywood, only to come home and contemplate his life.
For such a small independent film, Burrows roped in some major talent, including Tim Matheson ("Animal House"), Jerry Stiller ("Seinfeld") and Fred Willard ("A Mighty Wind"). But Burrows gets many a scene stolen from him by no other than former porn actress Traci Lords, as a truly charming Milwaukee resident. "Chump Change" is a wonderfully enjoyable and often hilarious little film that really captures the essence of Wisconsin life. To add to the humor, on the DVD Burrows delivers both a director's commentary on the film and a director's commentary on that director's commentary.
Burrows will also be making an appearance at 7 p.m. Friday at the Barnes and Noble at Mayfair Mall, 2500 N. Mayfair Road, Wauwatosa. He will be signing copies of the DVD and will also take part in a Q&A with visitors.
