Earned a 1993 Tony nomination as Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie", in which she starred opposite Liam Neeson, Natasha Richardson, and Rip Torn.

Wrote and starred in the hit off-Broadway play "Afterplay" (1995), which also starred, at various times, Jerry Stiller, Rita Moreno, Rue McClanahan and Barbara Barrie.

Is of Irish ethinicity

Mother-in-law of actress Christine Taylor.

She and Jerry Stiller appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" as Stiller & Meara every two months for a total of 36 times.

Won an Obie for the 1955 off-Broadway production "Madchen in Uniform."
